What Rough Beasts
Herodosus is one of the largest known population centers (alongside Koloss), with around 8,000 people living in the city proper and the surrounding countryside.
The hill that the city is built on was the spot where one of Agoros’ mortal lovers—Herodora—was killed. In her memory, he caused a holy laurel tree to grow on the site. Later the hero Polykleides, fleeing from the madness of his step-father Wanax Noros (king of Koloss, grandson of Wanax Atulus), discovered the holy tree and decided to found a city there.
The soil of the area is too poor for much farming, but the city trades fish, quarried stone, and copper (an essential component for making bronze) up and down the coast, and has prospered.
